Cleanings and exams
A cleaning removes the buildup a toothbrush can't reach. An exam is when the dentist looks at your teeth and gums. Both are for any age, and they are usually done together.
What happens
It is usually one visit of about an hour, or less for a follow-up check.
- 01
Step 1: A conversation
The dentist asks what is on your mind and how things have been since your last visit.
- 02
Step 2: The cleaning
Buildup is removed from your teeth and along the gum line, and your teeth are polished.
- 03
Step 3: The exam
The dentist checks your teeth, gums, bite and mouth, and takes X-rays only if she needs them.
- 04
Step 4: What comes next
If she sees something to take care of, she explains it and gives you the cost in writing before doing anything.
The number of visits depends on you. The dentist will tell you what to expect for yours.
Comfort, choices and care
Comfort
A routine cleaning rarely needs numbing. If an area is sensitive, say so and the dentist will numb it. You can raise a hand for a break.
If you wait
Buildup keeps adding up and can irritate the gums. A cleaning put off for a long time can take longer. The dentist will tell you how often you need to come, based on you.
Risks and after-care
Your gums may bleed a little and your teeth feel sensitive for a day or two. If the bleeding or soreness continues, call us.
How it is billed
The cost is in your written estimate before we start. If you have a dental plan, Celeste checks beforehand what your plan pays for a cleaning. See how fees work.

Questions about cleanings and exams
How often should I come?
It depends on your health. The dentist will tell you how often, and it can be different for each person in your family.
Do I always get X-rays?
No. They are taken only when the dentist needs them to see something you can't see by looking.
What is a deep cleaning?
It is a more careful cleaning below the gum line, done one area at a time. The dentist explains why she recommends it and gives you the cost in writing.
