Tooth removal

A tooth comes out when it can't be repaired, when an infection doesn't clear or when it is too loose to hold. We always talk about the options first, including what happens if you wait.

What happens

A simple extraction is usually one visit. If the dentist sees that a tooth needs an oral surgeon, she tells you and refers you.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Exam and estimate

The dentist checks the tooth, explains the options and gives you the cost in writing.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Numbing

She numbs the tooth and gum and waits until you confirm you feel nothing.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The procedure

She loosens the tooth and takes it out. You will feel pressure, but not sharpness. You can ask for a break.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Care at home

You are told how to care for the area, what to eat and when to call. You get it in writing too.

The number of visits depends on you. The dentist will tell you what to expect for yours.

Comfort, choices and care

  • Comfort

We numb the area before starting and wait until it is numb. Pressure is normal. If you feel sharp pain, say so and the dentist will stop and numb more.

  • If you wait

An infected tooth can swell and cause strong pain, and the infection can spread. Other options, such as a root canal, depend on the tooth. The dentist will tell you which ones there are in your case.

  • Risks and after-care

Some bleeding and swelling the first day is normal. Call us if bleeding doesn't stop, pain grows after a few days, you have a fever or the swelling grows. If swelling spreads to your face, eye or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to an emergency room or call 911.

  • How it is billed

The cost is in your written estimate before we start. If you have a dental plan, Celeste checks beforehand what it pays. If you have no insurance, the estimate is yours to take home. See how fees work.

Questions about tooth removal

Will I be put to sleep for a tooth removal?

No. We numb only the area, and you are awake. If you think you need more, talk with the dentist before the visit.

How long does it take to heal?

Everyone heals differently. The dentist will tell you what to expect and when to come back for a check.

What about the space where the tooth was?

We talk about the options for replacing it, such as a partial denture, and about what happens if you decide not to.
